homemade laundry detergent review

So, I finally finished off my
10 gallons of homemade laundry detergent!

Here's what I think about it...

the pros
*I liked not being worried about running out for a loooong time.
*It was fun to play with different essential oils to adjust the fragrance.
*We saved money.

the cons
*I wound up using more than 1 cup per load
because it seemed like 1 cup wasn't quite doing the job.
So, it didn't go as far as I had hoped.
*It did not get stinky, sweaty, workout clothes clean,
no matter how much I used.
*One little guy in our house thought it was applesauce
and kept wanting to eat it.

So, the  question is...
Will I make another batch?
Yes,
but I'll keep a box of Tide on hand
for really stinky, dirty loads.

And, as for using vinegar
as homemade fabric softener...

First of all,

I definitely don't recommend using just vinegar
if it's something you hang to dry.

Here's what I did;
I realized I really like the Downy fragrance,
so I added a cap full of Downy to a bottle of vinegar.

It's the best of both worlds...
our clothes are super soft and Downy fresh,
and the vinegar is also softening our clothes
and cleaning our washing machine with each use.

I'd love to hear from those of you
who've tried it.
Let me know what you think!

  1. Hi! I have been making my own homemade laundry detergent for a while now and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! I decided to use a powder formula instead of the liquid because I didn't want to have to store the big tub of liquid detergent. I blogged about it here: http://bellabdesigns.blogspot.com/2011/04/2011-goals-share-morespend-less-share.html I use only 1 tablespoon on regular loads and 2 tablespoons on towels. My clothes come out feeling SO much cleaner than they did with the commercial detergent. Who knew?!?!?

I use vinegar for fabric softener (and stinky smell remover) and it works great. I do not, however, like the smell of full strength vinegar. I mix vinegar half-and-half with water in my fabric softener dispenser in my washer and it works great!

HTH! Great blog! Going to be your newest follower!

  2. Just found your blog--it's a keeper :)

I also (like Katie who posted above) preferred to use the powder detergent! I haven't bloged about mine yet-but I did make the liquid-and found the powder MUCH faster...with essentially the same ingredients :)

    I'll be back :)
    Smiles~

  4. Ok I'm a little late to the game but we also use the powdered version. I even let the kids help me make it.

In WI I'm having to use more, two spoonfuls instead of my usual one but I think it's the hardness of the water. It even gets my father's farm clothes clean. They are a special breed of dirty.

Have fun with it! Sometimes I could find Yardley of London soaps in G-town and (in my experience) they work as well as the Felsnaptha and smell amazing.

    Good luck!
